TL;DR

Background

Ventureport is a start-up accelerator based in Hong Kong that provides funding, support and consultations. Although they are a start-up accelerator, they are a start-up themselves.

Problems

Being the first designer in a start-up company, I was tasked with building their brand. Previously, they relied solely on their connections when they were looking for customers. Hoping to expand, they needed an online presence to encourage entrepreneurship and promote their service.

Ventureport was hoping to launch its brand and differentiate itself from its competitors by being more beginner-friendly and focusing more on communicating with its customers, rather than simply being a fund.

Actions

I designed, implemented, and optimised a website for Ventureport to promote its online presence while proposing a variety of key visuals to adhere to its brand image.

Results

The website has become a channel for potential customers to contact the company while providing news summaries to encourage people to learn more about business and entrepreneurship.

Process

Define

Ventureport’s website is my first project after joining the company. So I was not immediately sure what kind of image and messages the company would like to tell. While the goal is obvious, there are many ways to achieve it.The founders are very keen on discussing the business model and their expected customer targets. We had a lot of funky and wild ideas, but we quickly narrowed our development path and company image.

Ideate

After a lot of meetings and back and forth, we came up with these messages:

  • Playful
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Sense of community
  • Encouraging
Prototype

After we set the tone, we tried a lot of different approaches. Finally, the founders suggested my ability in illustration might be able to deliver a playful yet official tone.

Results

The website was gradually launched, while we kept modifying the content and adding new features. The website transformed over time, from a static site to a dynamic site with a CMS embedded, with new content updating every week, gradually improving the website’s SEO. We also saw an increase in the number of inquiring clients, potentially becoming part of the Ventureport community.

Don't marry to a single idea

  • I would never have thought the website would look the way it looks today, which is wildly different from day 1. The process could be more efficient if we explored more ways to approach the tone, before tweaking the same time over and over without seeing significant improvements.

Appreciate a gradual launch

  • The way we launched the website in a relatively slow manner allowed us to absorb feedback from a variety of sources, from beginning clients to experienced experts in different corporate sectors.
